Turkey & Austria July 2014

A two week visit to the UK started with a short visit to Istanbul, while flying Turkish Airlines to Salzburg for the International DC-3 Fly-In being held there on Saturday 5th July. Departing Dammam on Friday 4th, TK151 was operated by two months old A321(SL) TC-JSI, off at 0200 for the 3.50 hour flight, landing at 0550. With runway 05 in use for arrivals, i then headed straight to the water front area at Florya Park, where the next three hours were spent taking landing shots, before returning to the terminal for the onward connection to Salzburg. TK1381 was operated by A319 TC-JLO, departing at 1250 and landing 2.20 hours later at 1410L.

Now, the rest of Friday and most of Saturday was to be spent at Salzburg, catching the arrivals for the DC-3 Fly-In today, before going into the display area in the morning. As well as these, another reason for visiting here, was for the Red Bull 'Flying Bulls' collection, including finally catching up with classic DC-6B OE-LDM (the second last DC-6 built), which thankfully was to fly on both days. Unfortunately, in the end, the Fly-In was only to be attended by five Dakota's, including the hosts (non-flyer) C-47A N86U painted in Austrian Airlines colours, and Malev Li-2 HA-LIX which flew pleasure flights. As well as these, 'DC-3 Vennerne' DC-3A OY-BPB/K-682, 'Swissair' DC-3C N431HM, and Dakota Heritage DC-3C N473DC restored into USAAF 87th TCS markings as '42-100882/3X-P' also participated in the event.

From Salzburg it was on to the UK later on Saturday 5th, flying to Stansted with Ryanair on FR305. Operated by B737-800 EI-EFS, departure was at 1745 for the 1.45 hour flight, landing at 1830L. Leaving the UK twelve days later, returning to Dammam with Turkish Airlines, first flight was TK1984 from LHR on Thursday 17th. The overnight flight was operated by A321 TC-JRR, off at 2310 and landing 3.05 hours later at IST at 0415L on Friday 18th. With a connection later that night, a full day was then spent here, firstly returning to Florya Park, with arrivals again on runway 05. After a good four hours at the Sosyal Tesisler Restaurant, an ideal photospot for runway 05 landing shots, it was then on to the Fly Inn Mall for the afternoon, at the excellent outside balcony photospot there, overlooking today's departure runway 35L. Finally, returning to Dammam on TK150, operated by A320 TC-JPE (in 'Star Alliance' colours), departure was at 2120, landing 2.45 hours later at 0105L.
